Rear brake drums
Hi guys, Im currently looking for a set of brake drums for my 66 1500 3/4tonne pick up... would anyone know where to get these? As im shipping to New Zealand i want to make sure they are going to work before ordering.
Many thanks |
Re: Rear brake drums
I assume you do not have any drums? Where did they go?
GMC Front: https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/...+hub,drum,1744 Chevy front and rear, if dimensions fit: https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/...+hub,drum,1744 The dimensions for front are same GMC/Chevy....so chances are rear match also. |
Re: Rear brake drums
amazon and rockauto had them last time I looked. rear https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004J8CI4A...v_ov_lig_dp_it

Re: Rear brake drums
Maybe you have a 2500 series. You are feeding us info very slowly and incomplete. You make statements without backup or data to support. I don't know anything about NZ requirements.....but we need data for this type of hard to find item and be sure we are looking for the right truck series. Trying to be sure non standard modifications have not been made. I.E. donor chassis, donor differential/axle, wrong vin tag due to swapping, etc.
1. What is actually wrong with the drums to make them NZ non compliant? 2. You say ID of rear is 12". What is ID of front. What is the inside width? 2 1/2? From your title, are we to assume you only need rear drums? 3. Is NZ going to take drums off and inspect/measure? 4. Are you saying NZ does not allow drums to ever be turned???????? Is there no appreciation for classic trucks and the lack of parts?...and enormous shipping costs. 5. If the minimum wall thickness of the drum, which is stamped on it, is not violated, the drums don't need turned/replaced. No matter if grooved or not, Shoes will comply. US DMV does not inspect old trucks and they sure don't take off the drums. 6. You will probably have a really hard time finding new drums. It seems the GMC Series 2500 has 12" x 2 1/2" shoes. 7. What is the VIN of your truck? There are several older posts on here discussing drums and part numbers. In the end you may have to buy used drums in USA. Arcing shoes and turning drums was always a scam to make easy money. Also...Now-a-days parts are pretty accurate. Shoes last way longer. |

Im pretty sure everything is original regarding chasis/diff axel etc. The rear drums are too worn/grooved and would need to be replaced or machined, i just thought it would be easier to replace them than have them machined down, also dont know the max wear measurements as they are not stamped on the drums. The rear drums look like they may have been modified at some stage as there seems to be a weld around them... I will attatch photos. Pretty sure its a 1500 from what i can tell, will attatch photo of vin plate... yes they spend close to a day looking carb over for any rust in the body and or chasis, they pull brakes right apart, check cylinders arent leaking etc. front drums look good still, Id is about 11.2 inches which i can easily find replacments online if need be. Appreciate the help, sorry about my slow replies, different time zones and life is busy with a newborn Attachment 11140 Attachment 11141 Attachment 11142 Attachment 11143 |

they are available. I posted an Amazon link above plus rock auto has them. the only hard thing about it is there is no self-adjusting kit made for that size. https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/...+hub,drum,1744 All are listed for 60-65 and that must be the issue. the 66 pics looks same to me. Pull your drum and measure it. all the specs are here to compare. https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...t=1744&jsn=557 |
