I wouldn't worry too much about the lifter noise since these engines are equipped with solid lifters, and they do require some clearance between the rocker arms and the valve stems. I can't quote the clearances required since I don't have that data right in front of me. It's been a long time since I've worked on any of these engines, so I'm just guessing here, but somehow .013 on the intake valves, and .017 on the exhaust valves comes to mind, and I believe those settings would be with the engine at normal operating temperature.
