Well with Pepsi's encouragement I did give the silicon seal a shot. Came out very well though I won't know for a bit how watertight it is. I also put a good size ring of it around the area that goes through the firewall. And on the outside.
You can see the contacts and the first on the left is the high-speed contact. The second from left after the gap is the ground or negative. The one on the right is Positive (it has two connection posts), but I only used one.
