Bob,

You can make the copper welding backing spoon or buy one from Harbor Freight/eBay/amazon, etc. You can cut and flatten a piece of copper pipe as well if you have some handy

You put the copper behind where you're going to weld up and it keeps the hole from getting melted and bigger
