A couple of years ago I thought I would do my hood a favor and lubricate the many pivot points on the hinges.
Unfortunately, it was only the friction of those points that was holding the hood safely open! The springs have lost just enough strength to do the job.
Now I have two lightweight dowels that tuck nicely into the edges of the hood, out of sight.
Either one provides the necessary holding power and, together, redundant security.
After 56 years, I am pleased with my truck.
Appreciate it Jim! Based on your suggestion I've ordered new repro hood springs and they make a world of difference! The hood now stays open like it should and the springs provide plenty of safety. I lubricated the hinges with PTFE spray.
I wanted to test them first as I don't like reproduction parts, but these look great. I'll paint them soon.

Did the first oil change today! I've ran the engine for 500 miles so far and I'm very satisfied with the performance.
Oil filter was cut open and looks great. Lots of phosphate coating from the camshaft, some small bits of metal, small pieces of RTV and engine paint but that's all.

This funnel is really handed for our GMC V6's. It is made by Lisle and the part number is 17232.

Changed the oil and went with Mobil 1 FS 0W-40. I've read good things about this oil and it has about 1000 ppm zinc to boot. It's fully synthetic, which is great. Changed the filter to a new Fram PH11.
Had a small leak at the oil filter sender, a little bit of teflon tape on the 1/8 NPT fitting fixed it immediately.

Lashed the valves, a few minute adjustments here and there brought them back into spec. Plugs look great.

Got a ton of small repairs to do on the rest of the truck. Planning to tackle most of these before heading out to Canada.
