6-ply will be fine for commuting or light hauling. Many modern half-tons are equipped with that from the factory.

I would keep the same size that's on it. It's fairly close to the factory size and should help with reducing steering effort, as well as keeping the speedometer close to accurate.

If you're looking for a good, budget friendly tire then I would recommend Hercules TerraTrac CH4. Fairly inexpensive as far as truck tires go, and a great highway tire.
