My '67 had the same symptoms. Turned out to be crud in the gas tank. It would get sucked up to the fuel pickup and eventually block it. After sitting for awhile, it would fall off and settle to the bottom of the tank again. Rather than try to clean out the old original tank, it was easier to just replace it. They're not super-expensive, and it took care of my problem.
