That style is very handy for changing gears. You pull the axles and driveshaft, and then swap out the center section with another with the ratio of your choice. You can set up gears on the bench I stead of under the vehicle.
When I worked in off road racing they would have 2 or 3 different ratios for each truck plus a spare in every ratio X $7000 for a new, complete unit= $$$$$. Then they have them rebuilt at least once a season.
