Default Plaid Valve Covers....straight from the west coast Factory Rep.

When I was 14, I bought a 1963 custom cab, big back window 1/2 ton pickup from a retired factory Rep. He had bought the truck he had driven around the west coast from GMC when he retired. It had just turned over 100,000 miles. He made me promise never to sell her, then proceeded to tell me that his truck had lots of modifications to get better mileage, handle better, and be as reliable as it could be made to be since he traveled the entire west coast and mountain region. He said that it was one of the early trucks off the line and soon after his first trip and needing some valve train attention (heavier springs?) it was given a 3:23 rear end, a custom carb (that I have never found parts for) and 4 more cigarette lighters. He told me that the Valve train upgrades would be marked by the plaid valve covers later once more started coming back for the upgrade. GMC went with the advertising slogan "thrifty as a Scott". The new 305E had better mileage than the earlier 305 V6 engines, and was a bit lighter. I still have Betsy. 365,000 miles and going strong! I have everything I need to restore her. Picture 1 is 1980, 2 is last week.
