Great pictures! Thanks for the help everyone. What confused me was that the washers have a square hole, which implied to me that they would go directly underneath the head of the carriage bolt as to lock it in place. When they go underneath the bedwood the square hole would not be able to hang onto the square portion of the carriage bolt as it sits too low. And all bolts go in from the top as far as I know (meaning bolt head up, not vice versa, so that is no option either)

Still unsure why these have a square hole.
