flywheel part number

My parts book is a 1960 and doesn't include many of the later engines. I need an application for a flywheel # 2423465. Its an 8 bolt, and fits the 478 crank.

What year is your 478? I do have a 62 parts book as well as a couple from the 70's so I may be able to see what that part number matches up to but it won't be till Thursday mid afternoon, I'm out of town till then.

The serial is 478M0004.
I don't know the year but it has the M designator which makes it a 66 or later. The 004 is a pretty low sequence number, so Im guessing it is a 66.
The flywheel was a loose "find" in a treasure pile.

I guess the real question is how to tell if a flywheel is internally or externally balanced. This one doesn't have any bulges or added mass, but has extensive drilling on one side.

On the side facing the crankshaft there will usually be a slight bulge and the rest of the surface is cast or machined lower and there can be some partial holes drilled. Majority of the 8 bolt flywheels from a V6 will be like this other than the 401 since it's internally balanced.

Ok maybe not... Sometimes, its amazing the things that I miss.
It did have small bumpouts in the casting. It was a bit hard to see until I marked the edges with soapstone. So it appears that it is externally balanced.
Unfortunately the starter ring gear teeth are far too closely spaced and doesn't match my starter teeth. I guess I need to go to starter school as well...
