Does anyone know what the difference is between 1960 to 1963 V-6 and the 1964 305E motor. I see timing chains always offered for the 60-63 but not the 1964. I appreciate the help.

I believe the difference is the early chains are the type used on gears vs. the later chains are the type used on what I would call sprockets (ie. like a double bicycle chain). You can interchange them in the 305's as long as you have the right gear for the early chain or sprocket for the later chain. My 305 E had the early "gear type" when I opened it up, thus I believe it was changed along the way. I changed it to the "sprocket type". Hope that helps. Pete Chronis would be the expert should I have missed the mark. Regards, Steve |

Looks like Rockauto.com has the later "sprocket type" chain if that is what you are looking for. Aftermarket part is a Cloyes C166 for $50.79 on their site. Regards, Steve New Orleans |

The gear type was used on 401 through 478 engines, the double row bicycle chain and sprockets were used on 305 through 379 engines. There is a difference in years with the chain driven setup as the tooth count was different from 1960-65 vs 1966-74. The 305E was introduced in 1963, the difference from the 305D was a new ventilation system and the previous 305A was a 1bbl carburetor.
