Have a ‘63 3/4t GMC w/ the original 305 E V6. I’ll drive for several miles and the engine just stops. I’m thinking it’s my Old Stromberg carb actung up again. Could of course be the fuel filter, etc. Just wondered if anybody else had that issue? Thanks.

I had something similar but it turned out to be a bad battery connection. The ground was disconnecting altogether. Apparently an alternator won't keep the truck running if the battery isn't connected.

Thank you guys both, very much! Mine will crank all day long, just wont crank for a while after stalling. Think you’re spot on w/ the fuel tank issue! It kept me, regrettably, out of the 100 yr anniversary Route 66 run here in Tulsa today. You remember where you ordered that?

Malfunction of Carb doesn't usually run for miles then stall. Fuel delivery to carb will do that. I.E. Gas tank debris as said, failing fuel pump, gas cap not venting, fuel filter clogged.
Not sure of your meaning of "crank". Crank means starter is tuning motor over before starting motor. You say: "crank all day but won't crank for awhile after stalling". If you really mean cranks but "won't start", that can be as said, fuel has to re-fill the carb bowl. Further evidence of pump, blockage or venting problem. But it depends on how you are using the word crank. So are you saying after stalling the starter motor is dead? Click click, nothing?......... or are you saying it cranks (motor turning) but won't start? Big difference. It's good to test before buying a bunch of stuff, not just guess, because it can be any of the things mentioned. So first run with gas cap off for a few miles, Still stalls? carry a squirt bottle with gas and when it stalls, shoot about 4-5 shots down carb throat to see if it fires. This can also be an electrical problem. But we need you to answer about the word crank and do the tests. Last edited by AZKen; Today at 06:45 PM. |
