Oil filter
I own a '63 GMC 4000 series dump truck that I use to plow snow with. With a 9 foot quick switch Fisher plow, a set of "triples" on both dual wheels and a load of rocks, its a real beast. I live in Northern Maine and so far (knock on wood) my old truck has made short work of any snow storm that Mother Nature has been able to dish out. My question is this. According to the optional equipment sticker on the inside of the glove box, it has the 351 V-6. It also has a 2 quart oil filter. I have been told that the filter is spring loaded and can be a real bear to change. I can see that there is only a few inches of clearance between the filter "can" and the exhaust pipe. Can anyone tell me what kind of a mess am I going to get into changing the oil filter? Thanks

Re: Oil filter
Hello Dan,
Here is a link to show the spin-on type and the canister type. Some people have welded a drain bolt onto the bottom(see photo album) to pre-drain the canister and then remove it. http://6066gmcclub.com/forum/album.php?albumid=63 The actual process is not bad just potentially messy. Have a pan underneath to catch oil as soon as you loosen the center bolt. It does have a spring and might have to be tapped to give way. It will drop down but should still be attached so you can wiggle a bit an slowly lower it down. Make sure to get all the gasket out (big O-ring thing) so when you go to replace it, it's seals properly. Put your new canister filter inside and fill with a bit of oil and bolt it back up. Then try to find the spin-on factory unit. Have a great day, Henry

Re: Oil filter
Thank you for the information. I will most likely change it before cold weather gets here. It burns/leaks enough oil so that I don't believe that I will bother to change the oil.
