Oil Priming V6 With Oil Pump
Primed the 1966 V6 351E with the oil pump.
1). Removed the distributor and used 1/4 drive 5/16 6 point socket with 8” extension ( make sure extension fits socket tightly so you can remove it when done). Would only use 5/16 6 point socket as it fits exactly, where the distributor fit. It should be a 6 point socket to fit correctly. You can also remove the valve covers to see oil being pumped out push rods, to verify complete priming. 2). Attached a short 1/4” extension to 1/2” variable speed electric drill. 3). Placed the 5/16 socket with extension on the oil pump 5/16 shaft with 6 points, in the block. This is where the bottom of distributor connects to oil pump shaft. 4). Placed the drill with short extension into the extension/socket in distributor hole of block. 5). Slowly start turning the socket/extension with drill. Increase drill speed slowly to estimate engine idle. 6). Ran drill for 1 to 2 minutes to get complete circulation, in original engine with dried crude, not run for 3 to 5 years. Wanted a really good priming of bearings. Hope this is helpful, comments welcome. Will post photos soon. Les Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Last edited by Aotte; October 7th, 2019 at 01:26 AM. |

Re: Oil Priming V6 With Oil Pump
Good information. That's basically how I did mine, turning the drill clockwise I believe. It can take a long time for the oil to come out of the rocker arm holes. Definitely worth the effort to do this before starting up a long dormant engine.

Re: Oil Priming V6 With Oil Pump
Heard a oil priming rod from a Ford 351 W works too.
