vin deciphering question
recently saved a 62 gmc and just got it swapped into my name. The registration lists it as a 1500 model but the matching vin says its a 1000 series. Maybe a stupid question but its got me scratching my head, figured maybe you guys would have the answer.

Re: vin deciphering question
Is the truck a 1/2 Ton or 3/4 Ton?
Also let us know the GVW listed on the tag. Should be on the drivers side Kick Panel.

Re: vin deciphering question
If you want us to figure it out:
1. Post the VIN here. 2. 6 lug wheels or 8 lug wheels? 3. Post a good picture of the Vin plate rivets. 4. Post a pic of the Title. |

Re: vin deciphering question
Here's the registration and tag pictures. Really just need to know if I ask for 1000 series parts or 1500 series parts. Attached picture of my project, don't judge the rims they came with the truck and are going back to stock soon. Cheers.

Re: vin deciphering question
The truck and it's VIN are a legit 1962 1/2T 1000 series GMC. There is only one place that says otherwise. That is the model box on the title. Either the DMV copied the old title or they don't know what they are doing, or both. They also left off the "A" in your VIN.
Go to our "Jolly Page", click on VIN numbers at the top left and you can cypher your own truck. You will see it is legit...and of course it has 6 lugs. Most parts on your truck are the same for 1000 and 1500 Last edited by AZKen; September 10th, 2020 at 02:43 AM. |

Re: vin deciphering question
Right, 1000 Series for sure. The first part of the Serial Number says it all, but the GVW adds to the proof, along with the 6-Lug Wheels.
Later on in time, I believe it started in '67, they started listing them as 1500's. That's probably where that came from when someone filled in that info on the form.

Re: vin deciphering question
Thanks for the input, I went to the vin page and thats what started all this, just struck me as odd with the 1500 on the registration. Already knew it wasn't a 3/4 ton just wondered if there was something I was missing. Thanks again, just finished the holley swap on the 305 thanks to this site. Runs so much better.

Re: vin deciphering question
BillT, you are correct about the model designation change. 1967 was the first year that a 1/2 T truck was called a "1500".
