Default Tips for removing 305 motor from a 60-61 pickup

Hello folks,

I am ready to remove the 305 V6 from a 60 or 61 GMC 3/4 ton pickup. The motor mount bolts appear to be pretty straight forward, but when I am looking from inside the cab at the manual transmission, I see two upper bolts from the tranny to the clutch bell housing, but nothing visible on the lower section. I know this is a heavy motor, so I figured it would be easier to bolt the tranny for lifting it out. Any tips for making this task simpler, and safer, would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Rob,
Here is the answer about those two other bolts from the archives

Some suggest to remove the front clip for easier access as the V6 is a tall engine. I have only done that on a 70 GMC (w/ a small block) and it makes it easier to detail and clean.

I pulled a 305 V-6 out of a '64 1500 3/4 Ton once. After dis-connecting the 4-Speed, I believe I just kept the Bell on it. Besides the Hood, I believe I just took out the Fan and Radiator and lifted the Engine out with no problem.

Thanks guys,

All the front sheet metal is removed, the truck was pretty picked over when I got it. I am figuring there are two bolts going from inside the lower bell housing into tranny. If that is the case, it my be tough to get to them from what I can tell up to this point. I know there are two pretty good sized bolts that appear go up into the bell housing through a crossmember. Hopefully I will detect and access the two bolts without yanking the tranny. Once I get the motor out and into the shop I would like to clean it up and either possibly sell it or keep it for a future truck project. I ran nice sitting in what is left of the chassis with a can of gas and battery, so it shouldn’t need much once removed.

Just drop the bottom pan on the bell housing and you will see and be able to get to those "hidden" bolts with no problem. I believe I would get them out with a box wrench.
