Donny the black background behind the grille and hood definitely is a nice finishing touch to the correct details of these trucks!

Has anyone ever seen a 60-66 GMC with Black paint behind the grill? Every one I've ever seen was solid body color unless it was made by Chevrolet. Maybe big trucks were done this way and 1000 series were not? educate me once again

That's because all the GMC trucks you've seen have been repainted, you find an original and you will see the black background behind the grille as well as the hood and center piece of the hood. Original literature pics confirm this

Your Truck is really coming together! As far as the bumper goes...

Hard to tell its condition or even if it will fit plus it's a different style bumper;
(cleaner looking I think). He's selling the whole truck,
but he also parts them out too.

Here you go Pete - this is my 100% untouched never repainted 1964 Custom Cab GMC. As you can see, there is no Black paint behind the grill, and there never was. No black paint behind the grill on the 65 Suburban I sold that had 100% original paint either. It had a solid Terrace Blue grille support just like you see on this light green colored truck. We need Jon Krogh to weigh in - he's got some original factory paint trucks and from the pics I saw none of his had black paint behind the grill on his either. Maybe certain assembly plants sometimes used the Chevy-like Black grille support paint, but the non-repainted original survivors around here don't seem to have it, and I've so far never seen one anywhere. There was an untouched Maroon 66 GMC with factory paint in the junkyard last year and I bought that grill and support panel and sold them - no black paint.

I've worked on many original trucks that had the black backgrounds, many were faded and almost hard to see, the black was a very thin coat. You will find that factory pics support that the black background. It's understandable some trucks may have not been painted that at times. A good example is of a truck with the black background was that 62 barn find. Go into the archives and check it out.

I know on the bigger trucks That the piece that surrounds the grill is larger than on the pick ups as you can see from this pic this truck has never been painted and it was black behind the grill , in my opinion I think it looks better makes the grill standout

if that is off a GMC its the first time I've ever seen a GMC support with Black behind the grill like all the Chevrolet trucks had. A guy I know up in Spokane WA has a veritable ton of these grille supports and loose 60-66 GMC parts etc and he said all his are solid body color too - he said he's never seen one with the Black either. This is certainly strange for sure - he is sending me pics of all his factory paint ones so I will share. Gotta be something written about this in the factory paint regulations if anyone has them - don't think my books have anything about 60's GMC paint regs but will check
