Re: 1964 GMC "crustine" semi-build.
You can't always go by the casting date

Maybe you should introduce yourself with a new topic? , that does give you a ballpark figure on the year, though it could have been cast in the fall of 1967 which would make it a 68. The only person that's good at figuring the year of these V6 engines is Lewis Matkin. I gave him several different engine ID numbers that were stamped not cast on the right front side of the block and he got them all correct. One of them was the block to my 478 that I had thought was a 71 but turned out to be a 68 same year as my truck To view some links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. Re: 1964 GMC "crustine" semi-build.
Most likely the fact that your 305E came with the breather in the valve cover rather than the back of the block would make it a 68 unless someone prior capped off the hole in the rear of the block and changed the valve cover. Lets compare engine ID numbers, the 305E that came of my 68 is #305E 497570, get me the number off yours and I'll send it to Lewis to see what year he comes up with.

Re: 1964 GMC "crustine" semi-build.
This is what is considered a breather cap with a breather tube for the air cleaner used on 68-74 V6 engines.

Re: 1964 GMC "crustine" semi-build.
Figures. lol Well a buddy of mine has that old setup on his now. I will figure a better PCV system soon. This one tend to throw some oil. lol Not a lot, but enough to have to wipe off the one valve cover.
