There are two types of distributors used on the V6 engines. Early engines with a larger cap and window then there is the later small cap style distributor just like the type used on 230, 250 & 292 inline six engines. Check the Pertronix website to find the correct conversion for your engine.

I called Pertronix and they said they don’t make a distributor for a 5L. So I don’t know where I can get a HEI distributor.

You don't need a whole distributor, all you need is the kit that replaces the points with a breakerless system. There is also a Billet GM HEI distributor on Ebay specifically for the GMC V6 from HEIDIZZY. Some 26 years ago I built my own HEI from a Buick Even Fire V6, in years that conversion caught on Jollys 6066 website with all the information on how to build it.

It's been a long time but VintagePerformance/Retrorockets.com came to mind from many yeas ago as a supplier of Pertronix Electronic conversion kits. I checked them out and there are two kits for your engine , there is the standard Ignitor electronic conversion kit part number 1164 or the hotter Ignitor II part number 91164 kit which would be my choice, so check this site out
