GMC’s 1960 V-6-powered trucks were the original professional grade
Nice article in Hemmings about our trucks.
https://www.hemmings.com/stories/art...ign=2020-11-18 Lots of comments below the article too -- mostly good but a few not so good.

Re: GMC’s 1960 V-6-powered trucks were the original professional grade
I'm a big fan of GMC V-6's. Drove a '62 6500 with a 478. Great, tough truck, great reliability. We also had other V-6's, 1-Tons, 3/4 Tons and 1/2 Tons in our fleet. A '62 305 did get a cracked block once. Even liked the 637 V-8 in our 9500. But in my personal truck, a '66 1000 Pick-up with a 305 V-6, I had pretty horrible luck with it. Just one of those freaky things I would say.

Re: GMC’s 1960 V-6-powered trucks were the original professional grade
Great article, I always like to read good things about my truck of fifty years.
It is a little hard to believe, however, that the cooling system pumps 141 gallons per minute. That seems exaggerated. |

Re: GMC’s 1960 V-6-powered trucks were the original professional grade
That 141 GPM is definitely exaggerated. The original brochures I have from the 1960s say that the flow rate was only 135 GPM at 3400 RPM.

Ed
Even 135 sounds high. That works out to recirculation of all coolant every 18 seconds, which would be the time for total loss if the top hose goes. It is a pretty big pump though. |
