Default 1964-66 Rear fender installation

I am in the process of restoring a short step 1965 GMC and it’s fresh out of paint. I need advise on what others have done to seal the fenders to the side of the bed. Some I have been told have used clear silicone to seal them before they are installed... laying a fayed layer of silicone on the fender lip before bolting on. Is this a good solution? Thanks for your reply in advance...

I wouldn't use Silicone, the closest to what auto manufacturers use is a butyl sealer, you can find this at most Automotive body shop and paint supply stores as well as the other type that is made by 3M and that comes in strips, called strip caulking also referred to back in the old days as dum dum!

I wasn’t comfortable with useing silicone. That why I’ve been delaying. I always thought some silicones can promote corrosion. The butyl seems the best option. I’ve also wondered about that peel & seal, if it’s a good option.
What’s your opinion?

Thank you bigblockv6...
