Looking good Jim! What brand of mufflers are you using?

Re: Header fab for 305 new photos 30 Aug 13
Not sure, guy doing the header fab picked them up, I just told him I want quiet with minimal backpressure. I know about most engines actually needing some backpressure and I believe these 305s are not much different. Just want to help the beast breathe and doing headers and a clean ex sys should do just that.

Re: Header fab for 305 new photos 30 Aug 13
Is he interested in making any more sets now that the hard part is done? If so how much $$$?
I don't know if a reply would be a rule violation? The other truck site pounces at the hint of any business transaction possibility. Maybe you should PM me? |

Re: Header fab for 305 new photos 30 Aug 13
I asked him early on if he would consider building other sets and his answer was a pretty emphatic "no". He took my truck on because of the oddity of the extra large V6 which to him meant "unique" and something he had never done before. The guy doing the build is a perfectionist and a consumate TIG welder, his hot button is anything new and different. As for cost, I believe I will be in the $2k range for the entire header + exhaust sys + Jet Hot Coating + Mufflers + hangers and "stuff". Pricy .. yes, but I believe I can safely say there won't be too many 65 K1500s running around just like this one. Just got the Red Oak back from the cabinet guy who ran each board thru a joiner and planer so we know each one is straight and flat. We let them sit clamped together for the past 60+ days in this Phoenix AZ heat to insure each board was as dry as possible and not given the chance to twist or warp. Still there was some movement, each plank will come in at .710" instead of the preferred .750". They are all clamped back together and waiting for me to cut to length, dado and stain, before fitting to the slats I built some time back. No bolt heads except for the sides and front. Will do some photos on that endeavor too.

I think I would rather build an aluminum intake than headers now that I think about it. |

Re: Header fab for 305 new photos 30 Aug 13
You got it right. I was just down at his shop and the project behind mine is a 63 Plymouth Belvedere with what may be the orig factory 426 Hemi. I am told the idea is to build a set of "Tri Y" headers with a long collector to compliment the high RPM range the engine is expected to turn. Like I said, this guy does the odd stuff then takes lots of photos. There is also a drag boat Ford 429 side oiler waiting for a set (after the Plymouth) of 180 degree headers. Now that has got to be a very pricy endeavor!

Re: Header fab for 305 new photos 30 Aug 13
Found out the name of the Mufflers ... "Turbo" brand. Plan now is to mount in a horizontal axis but above the lower line of the frame. I don't want them "visible" or spoiling the height appearance of the truck.
