Default Original Factory Speaker Repair/Date Codes

Hello, I am looking for blown factory speakers that still have the paper cones in them. Even torn cones will help. The original paper is the best match for patching working speakers that have tears or chunks of paper cone missing. Please save your blown speakers, as they can be donors so that other speakers might be saved. My truck is an early production 1960 GMC and it has a slightly different speaker bracket setup than most of these trucks. But the speaker itself seems to be the same. There are codes stamped on the base of the speaker, but I have yet to find the code to decipher the numbers. Does anyone have the code for the GMC Factory Speakers? Thanks for any help, Greg Mead

so when you say "My truck is an early production 1960 GMC and it has a slightly different speaker bracket setup than most of these trucks" that makes me want to see a picture of what you are talking about - I have a couple 1960 speakers I think but am not aware of any being different in the same model year

Hey Steve, This is the better (if you can call it that) of the two speakers I have. This one produces sound, but is very tired. If I can not find a decent original in better shape, I plan to patch up the cone and make do. I have a different looking bracket than I see in most threads concerning factory radio brackets. I would also like to know what the speaker codes are about. On my old guitar amps, I can tell you a lot about the speaker(maker, year, production order, etc), but I need help with decoding this speaker from the truck. It shows466938. If GMC truck speakers follow the same logic as guitar amp speakers from the same era, then 466 is a makers code, the 9 would be the year in the decade produced (in this case,1959),the 38 would be the 38th week of the year produced, second week of October,1959. The other number,7275457,is the Delco part number for 1960 GMC and Chevrolet Truck radio , according to the Sams Schematic information. I will go online and look for maker codes for companies that made speakers back then. Let you know what I find. Thanks for the help, Greg Mead

Default Re: Original Factory Speaker Repair/Date Codes

Here is a method of deciphering the code stamped on the speakers of the 1960 GMC trucks. It may likely work for later models. I will use my speaker in hand for an example. It is stamped "466938". This is the Speaker Code. The first three digits (466) represent the maker(in this case ,Delco). The next digit is the year in the decade(in this case,1959). the last two digits are the Julian week code(number of the week in the year),in this case, the 38th week of the year. Delco made this particular speaker in the 38th week (second week in September) of 1959. If you have a factory speaker in a GMC Radio from 1960-66,you should see a 6 digit number that begins with 466, and is followed by a year in decade number of 9,0,1,2,3,4,5or6. The last 2 digits will by default be between 01(first week of January) and 52(last week of December),the number of weeks in a year. So one can extrapolate that the Delco factory speakers in our 1960-66 trucks will have Maker Codes stamped within the range of 466901 at the earliest and 466652 at the latest. This range is not set in stone, but should used as a relatively complete guide to factory maker codes. The code is ink stamped on the bottom of the speaker on my example. They may have moved the stamp to the edge of the speaker frame at some point. Just look all over the back of the speaker you have ,for a number that has 6 digits, starting with 466. Happy Huntin, Greg Mead
