One example of a 1961 with the VIN on the door frame can be seen on Page 4 of the picture albums on this site: AZTimT's 1961 2503
I don't know if it also has the VIN on the data plate on the driver's side kick panel, but I would assume it does.

While browsing Ebay and Craigslist in the past I have seen other 1961 and possibly some 1960 GMC's with the VIN on the door frame. Apparently many or even most 60-61's lack the VIN at that location. All the 62's I have seen do have the door frame VIN.

I think it would be interesting if other members would share their observations or knowledge. I'm certainly not drawing any conclusions.

Again, thanks for a great forum with lots of helpful members!

I was just looking at an album on a 61. Yes it had the vin plate on the inner kick panel. Nice example, but I believe they changed location in 62.
Mine has empty holes on the inner kick panel, bits of the vin plate hanging from the pop rivets on the A pillar and no number on the frame rail.
Even looked under the seat for the build sheet, found pop tops from beer cans.

Hello Jagarra, I hope you can get your VIN situation straightened out. Do the bits of remaining plate have any readable numbers, hopefully matching your title?

No, not much of anything, just enough to show there was something there, just fragments.
I contacted the PO, which is a friend of mine, he had no knowledge of the vin plate issue. He got it and it sat for 6 years. He however, is contacting the fella he got it from, who may have had since new.
So at least we have some type of traceable path in my area.

The original owner had 2 of these trucks, one has been kept in a garage and hardly ever used. Mine was used around the property for general work, hauling and trash runs.

here's what my 1960 GMC pickup has for a VIN plate - it is affixed to the drivers kick panel next to the fresh air vent.

Jagarra,

It may not be as satisfying or useful, but does Nevada (or other state that the truck came from) put the VIN number on registration documents? California puts it on the annual registration form. If so, you might be able to come up with the number from a previous owner who still has this paperwork.

I know the vin number, have the title. But this is more of an exercise in determining where it should be located and how does one get a replacement vin tag.

I have contacted one outfit, no response yet. I will contact Jim Carter, found on previous forums threads that he can supply replacement vin plates.

The issue is if a vehicle is titled from out of state, a vin inspection is required, even though in this case it is not an issue, it brings up an interesting set of problems.

A few years ago I bought a motorcycle from a fellow I knew, he said he had the title, but could not find it, he never transferred it into his name. Not having a title gives you some real headaches. To make a long story short, it was previously registered and titled in California. I downloaded the necessary paperwork to get a replacement title. We went back to the original owner who last had the bike registered and got him to sign off, notarized of course. Submitted the paperwork to CA DMV with proper paperwork and was told we had to pay registration fees for the last 10 years that had elapsed from the last registration. This was to the tune of $750 before they would issue a duplicate title.
To my benefit, the guy I bought it from found the title and I was able to get it registered here in Nevada, some 19 months after I bought the bike.

A point to remember as one sees these old trucks out behind a house somewhere. Know the requirements of your DMV before you commit on buying a great restoration project without a title.

This link was posted by another member here (Slorio?) on another forum. Although not a true by-the-bolts restoration, it's a beautiful truck. It's listed as a 1961 and shows the VIN plate on the door and a detailed photo as well. The kick panel plate is covered by a utility trash bag but maybe it's still there.

I too had heard that some trucks had the VIN stamped on top of the frame rail, just below the driver-side cab area. I heard this applied to Chevy trucks only and not on GMC's. My 1970 GMC did not have a partial VIN stamping by the power steering box frame area.
