Default 1960 305 v6 carb

Hello to all!,
Got some carb issues on a 1960 305 v6. The current carb is a single BBl Stromberg. Has been rebuilt twice once by me and one time by a local mechanic that "specalizes" in vintage cars and trucks. Not right!!
What other carbs would work on the 305 engine?
Where to buy professionally rebuilt original stromberd carbs?

Thank you for your help and reply,

Fritz

Rebuilding these isn't tough at all. I'd be worried that there's something else wrong besides the carb if you've done it twice and a specialist did it once. You shouldn't need to rebuild the carb that much since it fell off the factory delivery truck.
What's the symptoms?

Some people are like slinkys. Not worth much but funny as heck when pushed down stairs.

Well, Tough to start and needs to really warm up or dies when peddle is pushed. used to take a quick second to fire right up, back fires and big lag when accelerates through gears, (that has always been somewhat of a problem). but now really bad.

Thank you just shy of compleatley lost,

Fritz

As Fetch says, it may not be the carb at all. I can go over a few areas to check but need the history first before trying a few tests and firing off a bunch of guesses gets nowhere. So..........
1. Starting with the first rebuild, did you rebuild because it was doing what you say?
2. Was it ever running good? When? How long has this been going on? weeks months years?
3. Did it do what you say each time after each rebuild?
4. Give us an idea of what it did at the beginning and what is does now.
5. Have you done any other work to motor or wiring or timing or ignition of any kind along the way? Replaced any other parts?
6. Do you have a 305A or other? B C D E
7. A 1 bbl Stromberg is not listed on our carburetor page for your motor....or Stromberd

Need careful and complete answers please.

First rebuild there was clearly a worn seal on the bottom that was letting air in there. It had a terrible lag and usually backfired when the accellerator was pushed. after the first rebuild it was leaking fuel. So I bought the rebuild kit cleaned it better than the shop did. It started and Idled good and ran much better but still had the learching lag ,hesitation when shifting. revving the engine at the time of engauging the clutch helped alot. Also having the choke partially engaged got rid of most of it but the motor was of course ideling high.

Yes it was running good except for the lag hesitation that has never gone away just kinda acceptable to really anoying. It started having the other problems end of August Lots of pumping the accellerator cranking pumping it would start but when the accellerator was depressed it would want to stall unless really warmed up. It would idle good cold. But it never liked a light touch on the accelerator.

Plugs wires coil points condenser a couple of years ago

it has the 305 A

Ha!! yea possibly I have the Chineese Stromberd version and that could explain it all.

Is the 1 bbl Stromberg not the correct carb fot this motor?

Thanks for your help

We can try a few thing and narrow it down. I don't want to be influenced by thinking it's carb. It can be. I am for now focusing on your comment about the choke needs to be on somewhat. Of course that means running lean. But not necessarily the carb.
I've got a huge list but let's start with some easy one's:

1. Advise what timing is now.
2. Carefully examine all vacuum hoses. Touch them, move them, look for cracks or loose. Check any vacuum plugs in place. Rubber or brass.
3. Also be sure the heat riser flapper is loose and will flap by hand.
4. Run the motor with the gas cap off.
5. Two years old for distributor parts now-a-days is too old, weak/bad coil or condenser can cause what you have. Points get eaten away or mis aligned. Always tweak new points , as necessary, to be sure the pads mate well. It's all Chinese no matter what the brand is.

If you want to go this slow route method, and I hope you do, report any findings from above so we can go to the next phase.

Keep in mind you may have the dreaded two or three things wrong at once. A little more tricky. Just try to notice any change, good or bad.

We will get there. I don't know if the 1bbl Stromberg is correct or not, the 6066GMCCLUB carb page does not show it for 1960 305A.
It shows Holley 1904.
