1962 305 Shocking Results
Yesterday I made the first big Trip for "Mater" 1962 GMC 3000 w/dump. Before leaving farm I filled him up with 93 octane and topped off all fluids. Kissed the wife and hit the road, my mission was to purchase 5 tons of sand and haul back from the Capital of Missouri a 52.6 mile round trip. Mater at 2200 rpm has a top speed of 46 mph in fourth gear unloaded... I tried to keep the tack around 1800 rpm 40 mph heat gauge was approx. 160 deg steady steering and overall ride was great. Smoked alittle bit but not too bad
At the sand plant Mater's dry weight was 6700lbs After receiving the sand Mater's weight approx. 5.46 tons 17600lbs. Mater dropped 6" still above the overloads thou. I still drove around 40 mph but closer to 2000 rpm. Stopping was alittle slower but not at all. Coming out of the river bottoms up a major hill I never got out of second maybe 6 mph. but smooth driving after that and great steering too. temp rose up to 190 deg only for a mile or two mostly stayed around 175 deg. smoking alittle more but still not bad After Dumping the sand in two differents spots for my grand kids to play in. I checked all the fluids all good, had a loss of 4.2 gallons of gas a Whopping 12.52 mpg After the Haul Im Very Impressed Even with the Load on the Tork Mater has is so impressive. This is still a stock 305d 1 barrel very little changes and as far as I can tell never rebuilt. |

Good to see it working. You need to look for an old spicer or watson gear box. They really help with the 3-4 split. And give you a good bit on top. All of my jimmies get worked. And they do it well. Most now have watsons. Last one with out one is getting a watson 39m soon. Barry.

Re: 1962 305 Shocking Results
Thanks for the advice Barry I will have to look into adding a gear box how much top end do they add? im guessing another 10 mph. And your correct BigBlock I assumed a 1 barrel by the size but took a peak inside and its a 2 barrel has a remanufactured sticker on it not sure of the brand Thanks.
