Welcome Grandpastruck

Any pics of the truck? Great that you still have it around. I have
found factory manuals on EBay.

Here is some photo's from the factory manual and a link on "how-to"
with more info about Exhaust opening and Intake closing procedure.

I am surprised that none of the books he has tells him this. This is some of the basic tune-up information.

Be that as it may, the X-6A-01 Engine overhaul manual is the one I have handy and from it the intake needs to be set at 0.012" and the exhaust at 0.018". Done while the engine is "hot" (warmed up). Final torque of the head bolts should also be done with the engine warmed up.

The overhaul manual I have scanned in all the pages, can be found here:
http://www.oeltd.net/doc/GMC_Manuals/X-6A-01/

The complete manual in one PDF is the first file in that directory (a very large file). Individual pages are in .jpg format (pictures).
Page 64 shows the specifications
http://www.oeltd.net/doc/GMC_Manuals...X-6A-01_64.jpg
while page 62 has a photo of the mechanic using the feeler gauge to set the lash
http://www.oeltd.net/doc/GMC_Manuals...X-6A-01_62.jpg

The manual for this truck is the X-6523. If the farm truck is a 1000 to 5000 series truck, then there were no changes significant enough for GMC to put out a manual or supplement for 1966 so the 1965 manual is the one to use.

At this moment, my manuals are residing in a bookshelf which is difficult to access due to the pile of computer parts and other junk which seems to accumulate in my office. I have the section on the inline 6 from that manual scanned in and online, but that doesn't help you. The overhaul manual that I reference above is a good, comprehensive, manual which should answer just about every question he (or you) would have on the engine.
