Default Toro-Flow Tach Questions

I'm talking to a guy about buying a mechanical tach- including tach drive- off a 478 diesel

I guess the most important one will it work on my 305? Is it "out of the box", "plug and play" off the camshaft? I know the camshaft is prepped for it.

Second, this tach an interesting dial. Colors may have faded with time, but there is a tan arc from 15-2500 RPM with "shift" over it (yellow? orange?) a green from 25-3400 with "drive" over it. The last I can guess- 34-4000="danger" Anyone care to explain this dial to me?

Can the hour meter be reset?

I know it's not the tach that normally be used with a 305, but it's pretty interesting in the dash.

Looking at my owner's manual after I bought my truck yesterday, I noticed in the accessories section the tach that was picture appeared to be a ribbon tach- kind of surprise to me, at least for a truck.

Thanks!

The only tach option I have ever seen is a sun tach, I bought one and had it retrofitted electronically so it would work with my tbi 350........scored a new old stock batometer also, again this is a factory option for a 1/2ton gmc per jollys website. I would not count on a mechanical diesel tach being driven from a 305v6 easily.....???

Dennis,
Do you have an photo's. Do you have this tach drive on the back of your block, by the distributor? If you do then I'd think it would work.

My 305A has the Holley and dual exhausts with stock ignition.
The V6's make their torque down low. I think the peak torque is around 1600rpm's for my 305. I shift around 1500-25--rpm's (like you mentioned for the tachometer); sometimes lower and sometimes higher it just depends. The green range is your cruising range. Don't exceed or go into the red range or you'll break something.

I have overdrive, so at 65mph my tachometer shows 17000+/-rpms (peak torque range) and it will continue to pull, if I get into it. I've yet to do a real mileage run, but it is improved. Best guess is 14-16mpg

Toro-Flow uses a differant tach drive than gas engine, its in place of the distributor, on top of the oil pump drive shaft. for a gas engine you need the drive as show above on the back of the block, and most 305 V6s don't have the holes drilled for the drive bolts.
