Default V6 Fan Question.

So I have been running my 305 and noticed the fan seems to blow air more upwards than it does at the engine. Seems to draw through the radiator ok, but never really blows it on the engine. Is this normal? The blades look fine and none are bent that I can see. Is there a shroud that will fit?

Hi TJ, drawing air through the radiator is the purpose of the fan. Blowing air on the engine is really a very minimal way of cooling the engine, unless of course it is an air cooled engine. A shroud would help pull air through the radiator much more efficiently and cover it's entire surface but it's purpose isn't to direct air on the engine. If you find or build a shroud the fan blade pitch should be about 50% inside the shroud.

The fan is actually trying to throw the heated air that was just pulled through the radiator out and away from the engine and that is completely normal.

Well said and great explanation! Of course all engines are air cooled, either directly or indirectly if they have a radiator.

Thanks for the replies! Just wanting to make sure as it is the heat of summer here and I don't want to over heat. haha Now that the engine is Clean on the inside it's been running a bit warmer which is good imop. Actually moving some water now. haha And the cylinders and chambers are clean.

Good info from DAC. Since you can't stick your hand down by the fan or radiator to feel the temp of air coming out, you are actually sensing the air blowing over/past hot exhaust manifolds and block. Bottom line, as you know..... temp gauge reading.
