1960 1002 Hand Brake Conundrum
Hello, I have a 1960 1002 2WD LWB GMC 1/2 ton pickup truck. The Hand brake operates when the rear axle is lifted. When released, the truck will back up, but the brakes lock down when put in drive. I disconnected the Hand brake front cable and the truck drove fine. The hydraulic brakes operate perfectly, but the hand brake seems to have issues. How can the truck only roll in reverse and not forward? I ordered NOS cables, but have yet to add them to the confusion. Any ideas readily accepted and appreciated.

Re: 1960 1002 Hand Brake Conundrum
Your hand brake cables must be adjusted too tight if it is fine with them disconnected. All of my GMC's will back up with the brake set but won't go forward. They won't roll back when parked on an incline though.
Beautiful GMC! Hope to see more of it! DAC

Re: 1960 1002 Hand Brake Conundrum
Replace front Cable today and hand brake is working like a charm. The cable had a c shaped kink right at the hand pull. Rusty too. New cable is smooth as silk.
