Default Bad news for my 401?

Started teardown. Didn't get far before I had to stop but found this.
Would freezing do this? Wonder how much more I'll find

I don't know anything, but isn't that hole by the pulley system? That wouldn't be affected by freezing is my guess. Maybe something got caught in it while it was running?

Yeah that is a hole in the water pump alright. As you said probably freezing. If you're going to put the 401 in your Willy's you probably need to swap the timing cover for a 305 style, switch to a timing chain in order to maintain the correct fan height.
