Default Electronic points upgrade.

Does anyone happen to have a part number for points upgrade for a 305a V6. Having trouble getting spark and about to give up on my V6. 61 GMC 4x4.

"Having trouble getting spark" does not tell us anything. Do you want help diagnosing a well thought out 100 year old ignition points system or want to "upgrade"? Whatever that means. I would stay far away from Pertronix. There are more distractors than proponents. Stay with GM, like Buick mod or fix what is wrong with your stock system. If you want help with that, tell us what you have tried/replaced/tested and what is wrong with motor/spark/etc.

Starts, won't start, won't stay running, no fire whatsoever, stumbles on acceleration, won't idle, fires a little...........

Pertronix has been in business for over 20 years with a steadily increasing range of products offered. See http://shop.pertronix.com/ and http://shop.pertronix.com/catalog/seo_sitemap/category/. They wouldn't still be in business if they sold junk or had a bad reputation. Summit Racing and Jegs wouldn't be selling them either. I personally have had nothing but good luck with their products on 4 or 5 different GMC V6s. If it makes you nervous to run with one, just keep your old points in the glove box. It's easy to swap back to them.

I just did a brief internet search and found way more positive reviews than negative ones for Pertronix products.

Your other option for going to electronic ignition is the Buick V6 distributor conversion. Just be prepared to spend more money and more time if you go this route.

I always liked Points and kept them in every vehicle that had them from the factory.

There must be some simple solution to your problem.

Have you tried a new Coil?

I have to agree with Ed on this one. Pertronix offers a high quality product. I installed a Pertronix Electronic Ignition kit on a friend's International Farmall Super H tractor over 4 years ago, and he is quite pleased with it. Very reasonably priced in my opinion, and very easy to install. No special tools or modifications are required. Also, in addition to the fact that your points and condenser may be bad, check your ignition coil too. There is a good possibility (due to its age) that it may be bad as well.

For what its worth, I switched to Pertronix over 8 years back, never had any problems. Well worth the $75.00 bucks.

I also agree with Ed, I've been using the same pertronix unit for 6 years now with no problems. First on a 292 engine and now on the v6 about 2 years ago. Daily drove it for a good year with no issues as well. They aren't the Best, but they're not Junk either.

As one of the few "sky is falling" members here, I have to chime in and say that computer ignition is great, but it isn't original and maybe more importantly if Russia, China, or some terrorist fires of a nuclear or dirty bomb your truck will be useless. Exactly as good as any computer controlled brand new one. Meaning to say it won't work at all.

On the other hand, points don't care if terrorists are around. They get your family moving regardless.

Just my 2 cents.

Some people are like slinkys. Not worth much but funny as heck when pushed down stairs.
