HEI Conversion
Hey all,
Happy Father's Day! Quick question. Does anyone have any advice on removing the dowel/pressed pin from the stock distributor gear? I gently used a grinder to remove the heads on both sides of the gear, but the pin will not slide out using a punch? Hopefully I do not have to drill it out. Any suggestions are appreciated! Thanks, Ken |

Re: HEI Conversion
When I built my HEI some 26 years ago I did the same but just grinded one side of the pin and it all came out. If you haven't try some penetrating oil on it and see if it will knock it loose.

Re: HEI Conversion
If you "back it up" with a plate with a hole in it, you can keep tapping harder and harder after penetrating oil. Once you get any tiny movement, it will go. The danger of cutting both sides off is you have created a burr to drive thru. That's bad. Try to determine if there is a burr and smooth it out. Also if it is held by a burr, you then "swell the pin" by hammering and make it worse.
Bottom line: If I'm not mistaken, you will be drilling new holes in everything so drilling it out is not a big deal. Bending the shaft by pounding is a big bad deal. This pin will be hardened, so drilling it out will be no picnic. Maybe heat the shaft, (not too hot!) if that does not damage something else. That may open the hole. Re: HEI Conversion
Thanks guys. I ended up drilling it out with a bit just smaller than the pin. It came right out after that.

Re: HEI Conversion
Well, got everything installed, but I am not getting any spark from my HEI dizzy. I used an 8 guage wire from my ingnition to the HEI. It turns over great, but no spark. Maybe bad ignition module? I bought it from that guy on eBay who custom makes them, so I am wondering if I should send it back.

Re: HEI Conversion
Could also be a bad coil, I would do some tests to see if it has either a bad module or coil and if it's one of these just replace it with a new one and then contact the seller and see if he will refund you for the bad component.

Re: HEI Conversion
Can you post the Ebay sellers user name or the item number?
