Default Frame coatings

I am going to remove the front sheet metal and cab from my 1966 GMC. I have another GMC cab without roof rust to install. I think I will also remove the bed so that I can work on the frame. I will probably just clean and wirewheel the frame. Should I just use black epoxy primer or some kind of product like POR. I have never painted on a frame before. Thanks. Any ideas would be helpful.

Use POR-15 it goes on, flows and looks really good. Also it goes on bare or rusted metal with no primer. Really like this stuff.

What type of brush or roller works best for applying the POR 15. Thanks

If you are wire wheeling it clean and are not looking for a show truck, you can just paint with semi gloss Rustoleum. Easy to touch up later. Check POR web sites for brushes or on the can. I used it on a motor, but bought the whole system. Pricey but came out nice. I have to say I don't see a need on a frame, BUT....I live in AZ. FL? probably so. Buy the time you buy the metal prep and enough POR you will be into $125-$150. Rustoleum is $6 per can. I am cheap as you can tell. I do like the terms "cost effective" and "value added".

This may get moved to exterior paint, etc.

Any firm brush will work with POR15 - but you better be prepared to throw it away at the end of the day because there is NO GETTING IT CLEAN afterwards. In addition, any POR15 drops on concrete and clothes will be a permanent reminder of the day you painted your frame. On hands the spots wear off after four or five days. A 2-3" roller is not a bad idea either, but there just aren't as many flat areas on the frame as you would like. Spraying with a paint gun is best left to the pros.

That turned out pretty well! Did you end up using a roller, brush, combination, or something else?

If I decide to do that, I'll probably get a cheapo spray gun (doesn't even need to be HVLP) and throw it away if I can't get it clean afterward. That's no day in the very near future though, so I'm sure I'll have time to consider my options.

Good job
