Default Looking for information on 1960-1965 7000 series

Hey guys, I am new to the forum, and hoping that I have come to the right place to help me out. I have inherited the truck in the picture attached. It is an early 60's B7000 series with the V12 twin six motor, other than that I have very little information. I am in the process of trying to get it home, likely on a trailer at this point. I do know that the motor turns over with use of the starter, so that is a good sign.

Here is what I am having trouble with:

1. What year is this truck and what does it weigh? I have the VIN, but nothing that I have found online will decode it. Does anyone have a guide to help me figure out exact what it is that I have? And for the weight, everything that I can find is GVW of 31,000lbs. I would like to know what the actual vehicle weighs so that I know if my car hauler will handle it or I need to call in the heavies.

2. Service information. I have searched online for service manuals, and have come up empty handed. I am specifically interested in the brake system at this point, as I need to get the truck rolling to load and unload it. The air brake system seems to work a little differently than any modern system that I can find youtube videos on. I also would like to know specs on the brake components if I need to replace. Where does one find parts for these trucks? Again, searching online comes up empty handed. My local autoparts stores have no idea what I am talking about.

Any help/resources would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and Welcome to the Forum PBUYDENS!

Great Looking B-Model with the V-12 you inherited.

There are great links on the V-12 referenced on the Jolly Website as well as a VIN decoder.

I don't have a manual for that B7000 series, but I found a few old files with some information. Other members with more experience about these BIG Trucks and the V-12, will chime in soon enough.

Welcome to the forum! I'm sure others here will be a lot more help than me. I just wanted to make a few comments. First -- be sure you check out Jolly's original site at https://6066gmcguy.com/. Second -- because of the windshield shape, your truck appears to be a 1960 to 1963 model. Third -- if you haven't already, look for a data plate below the dash on the left side kick panel. Fourth -- try big truck dealers for parts info, not retail parts stores.

Keep us posted on your progress, and don't give up! We'll be looking forward to more photos too.

Almost forgot to mention. Be sure to clean out the fuel system from fuel tank all the way to the carburetors. It is possible whatever is left (even if it had completely dried up) in the fuel tanks, fuel lines and carburetors could get mixed in with the fresh fuel and cause the intake valves to get stuck. If the intake valves do become stuck, then the heads will need to come off for repairs.

While you are at it, remove the valve covers and inspect the valve train. You had already crank the engine over, so checking to make sure you do not have any bent push rods (from a possible stuck valve(s)). If everything is OK then check the valve clearances. Then close up the valve covers.

Thanks for the info. Ed, you are correct about the year. I never noticed the direction of the pillar before. Based on my serial number, it appears to be a 60 or 61, it appears that they used the letter N for both those years.

Thanks for the links James, I think I will have to grab those manuals. At this point, the air system, and the wiring is a mess, so hopefully they have some info on that stuff in the on of those books.

Did you find the Parts id Plate on the glove box door. This plate will tell you all the important info on the truck.

The B7000 N model ran from 1960-1963 and had four series. The first number after the N is the series number. The series number will tell you the year Ex 1=1960,2=1961,3=1962 and 4=1963.

eBay has the 1960 GMC MODELS 5500-9000 FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL (X-6034) for $13.99. that manual will cover the first two series 60-61.

X-6034 https://www.ebay.com/itm/36429109921...Bk9SR9Lfuam5ZA

Depending on the year of your truck, you might need one or both supplement manuals X-6234 (1962) and X-6334 (1963).
