Default Dana 44 carrier bearings

What is the easiest way to get the carrier bearing off. I am trying to do everything myself because next I have to rebuild the front axle. Also do most people just cut off the axle bearings. Thanks

Get a bearing splitter for a shop press or a kit like the one linked if you don't have a press. It's called a splitter but it's a method of getting behind a bearing. Click

As far as the axle bearing. Drill a hole in it's thickness edge and then split it with a chisel. Back up the opposite side when hitting with chisel. It is also possible to cut with a angle grinder or maybe the splitter. It all depends on which type of fight wins the battle.

I rebuilt the Dana 44 on my 1960 GMC. I bought a press, 250 lb torque wrench, inch lb torque wrench, magnetic base dial indicator and you need two sets of bearings. A set of shims and a gear kit. There was no crush sleeve, so the rebuild is different that most are used to.

Been there done that. It can be a battle. I had one carrier that broke my splitter and ended up grinding it down part way and breaking it with a chisel.
