Default Oil Filter issues

i got a Wix 51121 filter for my oil change. I came with a hard fiber seal, which didn't seem right, don't remember filters coming with those.

It appears to be ever so slightly too big, I installed anyway and of course it leaks, no, it floods. Took it out put in the old one, knowing what would happen.

Naturally it leaks, at least not a flood.

Has anyone else had this issue. Is there another filter that might have a better seal??

Thanks for the help

This thread has some ideas. Did you use the wix parts lookup tool?
51121 can sometimes be confused with 51123 and that makes for a leaky engine.

Some people are like slinkys. Not worth much but funny as heck when pushed down stairs.

Thanks for the reply. I did use the Wix look up tool. Unfortunately it only shows a screw on. Went to the shop in the small town I live in, its been there for 75 years. The 51121 is he came up with, which looks exactly like the filter that was in it. So other that the gasket not sure what is going on. I will check out the thread. Thanks

Hello Catman;

Here’s a photo of the upper housing and here you can see the ring groove that the gasket fits. Old gasket material may still be in there causing your leak.

Thanks to all that chimed in. I got another filter, compared the gasket with the one I had installed and sure enough it was a 16th or less larger. Manufacturing issue I guess.
