1963 Suburban brake power cylinder malfunbcrion
My '63, Coral, is finally on the road and running pretty nice. Main issue at this point is that the power assist brakes aren't power assisting; a completely manual feel to it. My mechanic checked out the entire brake system as part of my annual inspection, and determined that the "C-3104 Power Cylinder" (located under the truck) "had a failed internal part resulting in an oil leak - maybe a bad diaphragm?". I can't find a reference to this part anywhere on the web; anyone familiar with this part, and a solution? I'd prefer to keep the truck in original condition, which would mean a re-build if I can find someone to do it.

Re: 1963 Suburban brake power cylinder malfunbcrion
The power cylinder is just your average hydraulic cylinder. A good hydraulic cylinder shop that works on construction equipment and such will have the o-rings and seals and will rebuild it. The company mentioned seems to be focused on the booster on the firewall.
Find a good old fashioned local hydraulic cylinder rebuild shop. Go there, take the cylinder, let them see it and look at the place. I would NOT want to ship it off, you may never see it again. The Ram (power cylinder) is available new because they were used on older Chevy full size and Corvettes. Napa may have you covered with a cylinder rebuild kit, hoses or a new Ram. I searched 1963 Corvette for NAPA part. The rebuild with the seal kit ($10) can be an easy DIY project if you watch a few cylinder rebuild videos. Here is a good thread from our Archives. Be advised however, I am not familiar with the word "malfunbcrion" Last edited by AZKen; October 5th, 2019 at 01:21 AM. |

So my inspection mechanic and I misunderstood each other over the phone. The power brake booster unit is vacuum assist, and is mounted on the firewall. IT was a vacuum leak from that that was detected. According to the manual, it is a "Hy Power" unit, apparently made by Delco. Anyone familiar with the unit, and rebuilding prospects? The vehicle stops with significant leg pressure but I'd like to see it returned to designed level of function. Brad

Re: 1963 Suburban brake power cylinder malfunbcrion
Brad, the link I posted mentions and has a picture of a Midland-Hy unit.
I’d call them for more information.

Could also be a Bendix Hydrovac. My 62 had one.

Funky61 nailed it; I found "Midland" stamped on the body.
