1960 GMC Paint Codes,Chips,Numbers
Hello, Here are the GMC Factory Paint Regulations. I also added the page from the Accessory Catalog that has paint numbers. I also added the paint chip info I have found. If anyone has other information, paint chips, etc. , please post them here. That way we can pool all of the information in one spot for the 1960 GMC Paint Information.
I would like to add another thread for each year,1960 -1966. That way we can compare changes and carryovers ,year by year, in one stop. Thanks for any help, Greg Mead |

Re: 1960 GMC Paint Codes,Chips,Numbers
My 1960 1002 is Cape Blue over Olympic White. I did a little research and found that this particular combo was only offered in 1960 and probably 1961(although I have not verified the 1961 availability, hope someone can). I have seen several solid Cape Blue 1961 GMC's, but I have not seen a two tone that I know to have been 1961 production, yet. I can say that both colors were available in 1961,so it stands to reason they offered solid and two tone trucks. The Cape Blue color first appears in 1959 GMC (if two toned, it would be paired with Dover White),but the Olympic White was not out yet. In 1962, Cape Blue is gone, effectively replaced with Terrace Blue. I believe my trucks combo to be two year only. 1959-1961 mark the years for Cape Blue. Olympic White replaced Dover White in 1960 and ran thru 1963.It was replaced in 1964 by Ivory and White.
I found two concurrent GM colors called Olympic White, with two different numbers. Cadillac was the other division that carried the other OW. They appear to be the same shade, but I can not say for sure. Caddy used there OW from the mid-1950's, on there awesome Biarritz, inside and outside. Does anyone have any GMC Paint Regulations from 1961 or 1962? I have 1960 and 1963 if anyone needs either. Thanks for any help, Greg Mead |

Re: 1960 GMC Paint Codes,Chips,Numbers
In the case with Olympic white, if the numbers vary from both GM divisions that indicates two different mixing formulas for those colors, so they are not the same color and color chips are not always that accurate either. Just stick with the Olympic white that's specific for GMC, as truck colors were always separated from passenger car colors.

Re: 1960 GMC Paint Codes,Chips,Numbers
That makes sense. The colors were side by side on a color chart page, and I could not discern a difference. They are super close to each other. I am going to check the formulas with our local paint mixer. They will know for sure if the two formulas differ, and how.
I am going to paint my Steering Wheel 1960 GMC Olympic White. They can mix the paint in an aerosol can for 25 bucks. I am a novice sprayer. This has a lot of curves and valleys. I am thinking of letting a friend with a booth and gun setup spray it for me. If I felt better about the can setup, I would try it myself. This has to be handled a lot, so it has to be the best quality paint for the job. Any ideas welcomed, Greg Mead |

Re: 1960 GMC Paint Codes,Chips,Numbers
I found this info. on PaintRef.com. It shows the Olympic Whites that were used by Cadillac, GMC, and Fender Guitar Company. Having restored and played Fender instruments for decades, I knew that they used automotive paints thru the 1960's. So did Gretsch and others. Gretsch even advertised there Cadillac Green Paint as a factory option on there Country Club Guitar model. From what I see here, and given it to be correct, Fender used the Cadillac Olympic White. The numbers are the same. The 1960 GMC Olympic White seems to be a GMC exclusive color. From this color chart, I see it as being a little lighter than the Caddy/Fender OW.

Re: 1960 GMC Paint Codes,Chips,Numbers
Like I mentioned in a previous post you have to go by the number, Other manufacturers can use the same name for colors as others. In the late 60's to early 70's Jeep also had an Olympic white and no doubt a different color.
