Smile Old Workhorse

This old girl was sitting in an implement dealers lot in Hiawatha, Ks, where I delivered last week. Looked like it was ready to go to work for another 50 or 60 yrs. Dave

First glance I thought it had a Tandem rear but not so it's either a 305 or 351?

Tag axles were all too common back in those days trying to make a little truck haul BIG loads. Local one man trucking co. had Dad install a pusher tag like that on an early '60's C-60 Chevy. About 8-10 years later I was hauling sand out of the local sand pit with him. I was using the Townships new C-65 hauling the same sized loads.

Strangest truck was my Cousin's MACK. Was a full twinscrew, with a 32 ft livestock rack on it. Frame had been stretched, WAY too much weight on steering axle. He cracked the frame several times, finally put an air lift tag axle right behind the cab to carry some of the weight. A single axle tractor and a 32 to 36 ft semi-trailer would have been much more manuverable, legally carry more, and in Illinois be cheaper to license. The Old Timers back in the 1940's and '50's had that right.

Never got a chance to open the hood and the fellow who was there said it was a 305. Dave

Most likely it is a 305 but it could be either a 1bbl or 2bbl carb version.
