WARNING to all-NOTICE to Jeannie
There are at least two albums on 6061 regarding spin on oil filter for V6. Each shows the relief valve installed opposite of the other. One shows spring extending into the cavity where filter spins on and the other shows the spring sticking out towards the motor. These albums may used by many to be sure they do it right, like me. That's how I found them. One album is on the banner now. The other is by searching. Mine came with spring installed into filter cavity almost hitting the big threaded post. We need to fix this info. Right now I don't know what is correct for mine. It is possible this could cause serious motor damage. Not sure. Someone please look in their 66-68+ repair manual and let us know ASAP.

I'm leaning heavily on the album that shows spring towards big threaded post, almost touching post.

So the pressure releif valve needs to have the valve facing where the oil comes in, with the spring behind it, so that if the filter clogs for some reason the pressure pushes the valve open and allows the bypass. This is probably next to useless, but it may come in handy on some level. I scanned this from a 1967 manual. My 1960 manual does not even have any pictures, so I know it will not help. Good luck, GM

Thanks to all who are posting. After David posted, I went out and looked at the filter I have and the valve. David is %100 correct. The operation of the valve is such that to let oil back to motor, it needs to be installed with spring totally inside it's cavity. That is, this way.

All as David said AND as the Album owner shows. Kudos to him/her. We need to purge any and all info showing otherwise, such as this: http://6066gmcclub.com/forum/album.p...pictureid=2147 This is the "Go-To" site for V6, we can't give out bad info. It would only ruin a motor if the filter got extremely clogged and valve was backwards. When valve is installed correctly and operating, dirty oil is being returned to motor. But dirty oil is better than no oil. I realize it was not the intention to give bad info, I myself was sure it was correct because I received a filter with it installed that way, a EBAY filter shows it that way and the album shows it that way. mine valve came out of the housing last night when i removed the housing is the normal? or does it need to be in there solid? thanks

Yes, it's a press-fit into the housing. Try getting a new valve and see if it's tight. You might try, very carefully, staking the valve in with a long pin punch.
