351 V6 4000 radiator
Howdy folks . My 1966 4000 with a 351 V6 needs a radiator . Have any of you folks had any luck finding a aluminum one on line ? If so where . Mine has a Harrison radiator . One of the radiator tags says Harrison , 66C 3144885 . I could get mine re-cored , but I'm thinkin that we caused one of the leaks reinstalling it after teh last repair , so I'm thinking that we would have better control reinstalling a aluminum one since it's lighter . That could be a bunch of bs , but that's kinda what I'm thinking . Any of you folks have a source ?Seems every where I look for parts there is no listing for a 4000 series truck .

Re: 351 V6 4000 radiator
You don't look for one by truck year and series. You buy one with the near correct dimensions...... and correct inlet and outlet sizes and locations, then bolt it in.

Re: 351 V6 4000 radiator
MY remark about the series was that none of the parts house's I have called through the years have a 4000 listed in their computers . I know that they are just too lazy to go look in the books .The old manager that was at the Napa in our town told me that " everything that is in the computers is in the books , but everything that is in the books is not in the computers " . I have Motors Manuals going back to the 50's but no parts books . I spent several hours last night & did not find a radiator that was even close . That's why I was asking here. I guess I'll take the old one in & have it re-cored . Its a Harrison , I hope the new core is as heavy duty as the one that is being replaced . The old one lasted 56 years .

Re: 351 V6 4000 radiator
Sounds like a plan. Just remember that we all have that trouble with some parts. These truck are old. Way less GMC's built than Chevy. Original Part numbers are no good. We have to use different methods on many parts. Like trying Chevy of the same size truck, measuring and searching, donor parts or rebuild as you say. Don't expect auto parts guys to know. Don't expect books will help. The programmers just went back to where they could get parts, or there was a demand, when they created a data base. Maybe someone here will see your post and have a solution. The next problem now-a-days is finding a shop that still does that work due to so many closing because of EPA, Covid and Aluminum Chinese Radiators are inexpensive.
I like to find parts. So if you want help, post the dimensions and where the inlet and outlet are and their sizes. If they did have a book and looked in the book and found a part number.............it is obsolete with no crossover. Last edited by AZKen; April 6th, 2022 at 08:03 PM. |

Re: 351 V6 4000 radiator
Overall It's 27" wide & 37.25 tall , upper hose is 10" in on the left & is a 2" hose .
The outlet in on the bottom tank right side , but I forgot the put the dimension on my drawing & its larger that 2" . The core is a 4 core @ 24 tall by 29.24 . Its a Harrison radiator & they were know for making good long lasting radiators . thanks animalsservicar |

I think you have your numbers mixed up. Over all 27" wide but core is 29.24 wide??? I assume core is 24 wide, 29.24 tall. |

Re: 351 V6 4000 radiator
Hopefully cheaper to re-core than to buy one of these and they are not the same dimensions. I saw how big yours was and searched mostly bus radiators. I'm afraid that a copper core that big may not be available anymore for a re-core.

Re: 351 V6 4000 radiator
Yea our right on those dimensions . I've been staring at them all day & starting to loose my focus . I took it to the only radiator shop in 100 miles & they said the core alone would be 7-800.00 & accouple three hours labor which gets me @ $1,100 + so I'm back to hitting the pavement . Ill look into those links , thanks .

Re: 351 V6 4000 radiator
If there are 351's in pickups or light trucks, whatever radiator they have will work. Don't need that big huge radiator. The motor does not get any hotter in a pick up than a 4000. The $300 Aluminum will probably work. What are you going to use the truck for?

Re: 351 V6 4000 radiator
It's a dump truck . I carry 10,000 lb's of rock sand , ... I did one load total truck & load 21,742 lb's , I was sweating that load . . I was amazed on what the V6 will pull . I just need to work on my splitting the rear end !! Seems all the radiators I looked at were 2 or 4 row , mines a 4 row . Like I told my kid I don't want to stuck on the side of the road with a overheating truck & 10,000 lb's of rock .
