Default 63 4WD Steering Gear

After 18 years my 63-K1000 is coming back together, replacement cab painted and back on frame, trucking runs drives and stops. Worn steering box, typical 8” of wheel travel before pitman movement. Any advice if any of this play can be removed? Is there any adjustment via the big slotted washer nut under the 2” hex nut where the steering shaft comes into box? Can I take this box apart for inspection without fear of nightmare scenario of getting a million ***** back in? This old truck ended its last life as a logging camp firewood hauler on the vermont- quebec border, initially bought for parts, the gear had a cracked mounting point, was held tight to frame with a steel strap... welded now.
Probably unacceptable as a rebuildable core with weld, new boxes look to be $700 and cannot afford it, any advice would be appreciated! Thanks

Bought a manual saginaw rebuild kit and the box is back together and filled with lithium grease. Looking for info regarding the steering stops on the axle, a bolt with lock nut on either side, should the bolt stops be stopping the steering or the end of the worm? Ive got 1/4” gap at present on each side, steering being stopped by ends of the worm... Any info or comments will be appreciated!
Thanks
Rob

Checked for this adjustment my books, but saw no reference to this adjustment. I would take it to end of worm then then bring stop to that point, back off a bit more for your 1/4" clearance take up the slack with stop and lock it down.
