I recently purchased my second V-6; the first was sold about 20 years ago-(ton stack rack with trailing arm (weak) coil spring suspension.)) Purchased for $100, replaced timing chain; new Carter Carb; one new tire--painted wheels & mud flaps. Sold it to a lady roofer from Kansas. HAD TO HAVE ANOTHER!

Current rig does not have weak suspension or frame. It is a '63 4000 Five Yard Dump with 305 C (860 lbs I think). I just crawled under the rig to check on fuel and oil filters. Q 1: Are the fuel filter cannisters still available? Q 2 Can the huge oil filters be converted to Spin Ons? Q 3 Would ROTELLA SYN BLEND be OK??

Hi Swede and to the forum!

I haven't seen the canisters anywhere but I know alot of guys use Rotella in their engines including me. Rotella doesn't have the zinc it used to have though (Thanks Obama!) so I use Archoil friction modifier in it too. Doesn't take a whole bottle, just a bit of it.

The spin ons I think are the same size as the smaller engines, just deeper so if you find someone with a spin on adapter for sale it should fit. BBV6 or Barry can tell you if that's different.

For a spin-on filter again I will correct there is "NO ADAPTER!!! What you have is a complete Spin-On filter housing that became available in 1966 on 305 and 351 engines used in light duty trucks as well as medium duty 2 1/2 ton trucks, this continued on up to 1974 with the 379 engines.

Bigblock is correct. No adapter only a spin on housing. As far as finding one I have one question. Are you a scrounger? If you are a scrounger you can probably find one even in your rust infected area. If not cruise the web and pay ?. If you are a scrounger I will expand on a few things to make it easier. As far as the fuel filter yes they are available. Now that I am getting over this bug I will go Friday and get a part#.

Not the canister, but the cartridge could be Napa FIL 3271

I put a Summit Racing canister filter in the fuel line along the frame to catch anything abrasive before it gets into the mechanical fuel pump. This required cutting a piece out of the fuel line and getting parts to attach some flexible line on both sides of the filter (flexible hose, clamps, and barbed end fittings to the filter) plus drilling holes in the frame to mount the filter. This wasn't hard to do, but took me some time to figure out.

My 1961 GMC 4WD Suburban has the canister style gas filter mounted to the frame, I purchased filters for it at Advance Auto Purolator F21115/ AC-GF157.

Good number Clyde. Also Wix 33271 and a couple of actual canisters: Delco GF62 and GF62P. Not sure if all those are stock or near stock.

THANKS ALL! After I messaged, I discovered the rich resources of the FORUM regarding the "SPIN-ONs." The bypass valve dialogue was somewhat challenging; I discovered the original filters for my 305 C, and ordered six from ROCK-AUTO to save future shipping costs. FUEL FILTER: I bought a Summit FUEL FILTER ASSEMBLY 3.25 (SUM-0G1507) and three filters to get things rolling. I APPRECIATE YOUR RESPONSES! My six grandsons are pumped in anticipation of hearing THE SOUND that their fathers and uncles enjoyed.

There are other options as well depending on which spin-on housing you have, the 66-72 style can accept a longer filter for more capacity than what the specs call for. I use a Hydraulic Filter which really is the same thing except for application, Wix #51831, NAPA1831, Fram P7029, AC-Delco PF 1095 and CARQUEST 85831, it measures at 6.8 inches in length. If you get a hold of a 73-74 housing, that one will accept all those filters I just mentioned along with the Chevrolet V8 style filters that measure over 7.5 inches in length like the Wix 51794 or AC PF-832.
