Default New Guy here. 1962 4wd Rescue Suburban Rebuild Parts Numbers Needed

I wrote another post and its disappeared, so ill try again. I have recently acquired a 1962 GMC 4wd rescue truck, last ran 2016 but they could never get the clutch and brakes fixed at local shops, i have bought the truck and i would like to know where i can get these parts, i don't want to rebuild if at all possible. I want to start with the master cylinder and brakes. then put a pertronix in it if anyone has that part number. here's a picture of the rig. Thanks

Welcome to our forum! Looks like you managed to acquire an awesome piece of history. We'll be looking forward to hearing more about it and seeing more photos too.

Assuming you still have the original 305D V6, the Pertronix Ignitor you need is number 1164. It's a simple and well-worthwhile conversion. I've done several of them.

Welcome to the forum!!!!! If you need any part #'s i can furnish them as well as substitutes i have come across over the years. Great truck and good luck! Btw, i recommend dot 5 brake for our vehicles especially if they aren't driven much after repair. Dot 5 fluid doesn't absorb water from the air like dot 3 & 4 do, and being silicone, is a great lubricant for the brake & clutch system on your truck.

Lewis,
RE: DOT 5 Brake Fluid...
I have never used it, because I have never had a need to have complete brake system apart , all at one time.
It has been my understanding that a complete flush must be done before converting to the DOT 5 fluid, due to incompatibility issues.
Am I wrong?
I do not have anything to reference at this time, but I just don't want somebody to start adding DOT 5 to an older system if it will cause problems.
Hopefully it is not an issue and my recollection was faulty.

Thank you for the response. i will take your advise and put Dot5 in because i will be replacing all brake components as well as clutch, if i can find new that is. they attempted to rebuild the master and the wheel cylinders two years ago and it didn't hold. if you have any secret honey holes where i can get new parts or something that will convert please tell!!

Ed Thanks for your response, yes sir it is a piece of history, i can remember seeing this unit in the parades when i was a child. now i work for the mounted patrol and that's how i acquired it. I am not sure what motor it is, i know its a Big V6 of some kind i need to identify it pretty soon to get parts ordered. it is the original motor. I was looking at some of your pictures and i love them! being a retired Firefighter and Emergency worker all my life im kinda attached to these old rigs. I did a pertronix conversion on my 66 jeep and it made a world of difference. i will get it ordered when i find out which motor i have.

Figuring out which V6 you have is simple. Just look for the flat spot on top of the block in front of the passenger side cylinder head. You can see an example here: http://6066gmcguy.com/EngineData.html. I'd be surprised if you have anything other than a 305D.

We7x you are right. I didn't make myself clear about dot 5. I assumed (the wrong thing to do) that a total rebuild/replace was what was going to happen. Thanks for keepin' me honest!
