'61 305v6 CPR
Hi all! Well I just put in new main bearings and rod ends to fix a sharp knock. Still knocking. Took the heads off today, foundation fairly pulverized metal screw partially imbedded in piston #1. Super.... I ground off the peaks and removed all foreign junk. Going back together now. Almost completely plugged off with sludge on top. Cleaned and oiled rocker rails. Each rocker had one oil galley open, the rest where plugged solid. What a mess, looking better now!! I got a new oil filter and it came with an O-ring. It's too small to fit the filter housing and when I took the old one off, there wasn't one on there!!?? Does I need one?

Good job getting it cleaned up!
 Another survivor! I dont know anything about the oil filters yet but I bet you can get an oring at an auto parts store cheap. Did you get the right filter? what part number is it?wharz my pikchurz?

I am about to try changing the oil for the first time in my 64 305E, so I'd like to know what to ask for myself....

Welcome Liltfy!
Here is the canister oil filter procedure from the manual. You should have a thin rubber gasket/o-ring/shell gasket (#8)about the size of the top of the canister(shell#9). Hope this helps

ok. Thanks for the info. I got the deer in the headlights look from the parts store clerk when asking about o-rings. I'm not picky, but I have little patience for $5 help. I bought a roll of cork gasket material and will make a couple of these up and put them on a shelf. I'm set for life LOL. I did get it all back together and buttoned up. Started it up and it came to life within seconds of cranking. Not bad for being torn down to the cylinders and all the main bearings to boot. Now..... Brakes and tuning and some nickel dime stuff.

What parts place were you going to? One of the members works at napa so parts numbers are pretty easy to find for there. Wish I could remember who now.

If you go to the wixfilters.com web site they have most of the info there.
Then take the numbers to napa or carquest parts house. The 1qt filter is #51121. The o-ring #15086. The 2 qt filter is #51133 The o-ring #15119 The o-ring at the bottom is #15333 Now I have never replace that and the spring would most like be a big problem with that. I look at that as if it is not broke, don't fix it. The o-ring at top I usually spread a thin layer of gasket sealer to help seal. I hope this helps and I have the right numbers. Keep them GMC's running.......

Thanks again... I made my own cork gasket. It's doing the job. After the second oil change and a NAPA engine flush, I'm hoping she is breathing and circulating better now!! Gonna run it for a few tanks and change the oil one more time after the new bearings have run in. I hand set the valve clearances before starting and it sounds fantastic, almost hate to touch it!! Working on brakes now and waiting on parts. Headlights are working and the horn now works. She's almost out of ICU!!! LOL.
