crankcase breather
how do you replace the crankcase breather element? do I remove the entire cannister or try to screw off the top?

It's designed to screw the top off and replace the element inside - you never can get the whole canister out without ruining it since it's pressed into the block.

Remove valve cover first and that will give you easy access.
