Default Hood Hinges

We all have probably experienced the back door/window gas charged holder-uppers on our newer rides pooping out and costing a bunch of money to replace.
Well after just short of 50 years with my 1960 3/4T stepside, I figured it was time to squirt a little oil on the hood hinges. Now it won't stay up!
The springs are extended (stretched) 99% of the time and relaxed only when the hood is open. It is only the friction of the hinge pivots themselves that have counterbalanced the lack of tension in the old springs.
Oh well, so now I will use the stick I used to use on my Pathfinder's rear hatch.
So much for good intentions.
Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Give it a while, it should go back to normal in time.

Thank you for sharing that Jim. Proves that dry is sometimes better. The hoods on these old trucks are pretty darn heavy with some sharp edges, not to mention the hood release mechanism. I wouldn't want it falling on my head!
The door stops also seem to work better (more friction) when dry.

I used the stick on my 61 hood because I found an original hood for my truck and it is heavy. I ordered new hinges and springs but they didn't hold up either. Someone on this site told me that some of the springs from certain dealers were weaker than others. I ordered from Brothers and the hood stays up now but I still don't trust it so I switched to a block of wood behind the hinge. Works good as long as you don't forget to remove it when closing the hood.
